HOSPITAL WORKPLACE VIOLENCE

Could this happen to your hospital?

Aug-2014: OSHA fines Brookdale University Hospital and Medical Center $78,000 for failing to develop and implement adequate measures to reduce or eliminate the likelihood of physical violence and assaults against employees by patients and visitors.

In the Brookdale case, OSHA listed training as one of the elements of an effective workplace violence prevention program. Further, the Joint Commission’s August, 2014 issue of “Quick Safety” recommends that healthcare facilities ” train staff to recognize and manage assaults, resolve conflicts and maintain hazard awareness.” Our hospital assault response and prevention training program provides employees with the knowledge, tactics and skills to achieve the recommendations of OSHA and the Joint Commission.

Our training helps prevent assaults, assists employees with reasonable responses should an assault occur and prepares employees for the media and courtroom aspects of violent encounters. Additional advantages of our training include less lost work hours due to injuries from assaults, a decrease in the possibility of a nurse shortage, an increase in employee and patient safety and a decrease in employer liability.
